  • 1k isn't that much if u cant afford that then why were you ever in so much debt

  • When you invest, you're buying a day you don't have to work

    • Build your future, small steps everyday, success is a process..you will be successful!!

    • Some people are so poor and been that way for so long that they lose their self confidence and belief

    • @Olivia Greg Tell her I referred you please

    • Catherine S. Woods

    • Facebook

  • Ty. I live in Bronx, NY and have never seen a Sonic irl but I get plenty of the advertisements irregardless

  • As someone with a higher student loan debt the death thing is a common joke between my friends and I... I mean none of us actually want to but when we joke about our debt we always joke saying we wish our campus was near the grand canyon so we could go cliff jumping

    • I left uni too without a degree because I was so far in debt and because the pandemic my uni got rid of my degree. As did all unis in the united states 😅

  • I don’t know what happens in America but years ago, when I ran out of cash I simply stopped paying my debts. I was already at rock bottom so the way I saw it I had nothing left for them to take. I didn’t bother paying bankruptcy lawyers or anything like that. Couldn’t have done even if I wanted to. I literally had nothing left. It took a while but I have since rebuilt my life. No lawyer got a single penny from me.

  • do a segment on personal finances

  • Where can I find whether Warren’s bill passed?

  • Kevin O'Leary's wife also drunk-boated and killed two people in a collision. That has more stigma millisieverts than bankruptcy.

  • Anyone else think Chapter 13 sounds like student loans?

  • Oh, sure, NO ONE could have seen that $80,000. dollars in debt for a Diploma Might be a risky proposition! Oh, wait, Except perhaps the MILLIONS of us that DO NOT sign up for that level of debt for some useless College education! So, Of Course, WE should all pick up the Tab for those idiots who DID so voluntarily, casually, and with a full comprehension of what they were doing. So secure were they, in the knowledge that they would be fully employed forever, in some Government job, that would overpay them their entire lives, and retire them at an early age, with FULL benefits for the rest of their days. Yeah, Right! Some of us WERE well aware that jobs are iffy, and no one owes us anything, so WE did NOT take out loans we couldn't afford to pay back, and we should NOT be forced to pay for those wealthy enough to NOT even flinch at an $80k school loan agreement. God knows we're CONSTANTLY being told that WE are the uneducated morons of the world, and these highly educated Geniuses are our betters, so why is it again that WE have to pony up the money to pay for THEIR choices? As to the other morons who file for bankruptcy, Sure, you can always find a person who through no fault of their own, ended up with medical debt that put them there. That does NOT address the MANY who got there through their own personal greed, carelessness, and stupidity. I know real people who filed for bankruptcy, and believe me, it was sheer stupidity, and greed that got them there. I went 40 yrs of life without ever owning a brand new car, or big screen TV, or even a Cell phone, but the folks I know who went bankrupt had all 3, and more. Much more, and THAT was 100% a Choice they made, not an unfortunate circumstance, that happened TO them. Why should others be on the hook for THEIR stupid and greedy choices? You act as if Bankruptcy is a benign thing - That Mean old Credit card companies, & car loan creditors just Eat that cost. They don't. They pass that cost along to the rest of us. We pay higher costs for everything, to account for their Thievery! Because Yes, John, it IS Stealing, when you buy something then don't pay for it!!! Spare me the tears. If you knowingly signed up for a Car loan, TV loan, or College loan, well beyond any hope of paying for it, then YOU, and YOU ALONE, should be forced to pay for it, up til your dying day, if need be. YOU are the Smaht ones, remember? YOU are the ones who look down your noses at the great uneducated (and debt free), who DO pay our bills, and Do NOT try to shift Our debts off onto others, when we find ourselves in a pickle. That girl is living in a mighty nice apartment, for someone considering bankruptcy. Maybe she should try living in just a wee bit Less expensive surroundings, and maybe she Could manage to pay for her own debt. Just a thought.

  • My wife has a Mitsubishi Mirage, and it is a great car.

  • Can John Oliver do a show on the UK Building Safety Scandal. A quirk in English leasehold law means millions of homeowners are paying huge costs for waking watch, skyrocketed insurance and remediation costs. Some apartment owners have got bills of £200,000.

    • Slippery builders did not install fire breaks and owners have to pay millions to fix it. Insane.

  • Mine told me that I needed to get a 2nd job even tho I work 50 hours a week already. Told her that she could file my bankruptcy or I will find another lawyer who will stop giving me bullshit advice to do it. If you have to file, research people. John gave great info here but do not let these lawyers give you stupid advice. Another great episode! keep up the good work lastweektonight!

  • What are the 4 items that John mentions? I only recognize the rat painting

  • Remember that one time Kevin O'Leary went on TV saying that it's good that half the world's population is living in poverty because "they all have something to look up to" (paraphrasing)

  • Omgggg when he showed the racoon man I burst out laughing even with the worse migraine right now! 😂😭 I follow him, he's so kind to the raccoons and his cats. 🥰

  • Having been around very wealthy people bankruptcy was not invented for poor people but was invented for the rich.

  • Very basically, bankruptcy is a procedure where, in a lot of cases, financially irresponsible people ask the government to allow them not to pay money they agreed to pay. Then, because our society is full of bleeding hearts, the government allows it (assuming the petitioner qualifies) and people who trusted the petitioner to pay may or may not get any money.

  • John always has insightful, intelligent, and interesting shows. This one is no different. My only complaint is that he NEVER touches on personal responsibility. We are not all helpless imbeciles unable to make decisions nor are we mindless victims. We are human and we make mistakes and more times than not we had a hand in it. Some of us learn quicker than others. I once filed for bankruptcy. I was stupid and irresponsible and got in over my head. I knew what I was doing was stupid but did it anyways. I know there are exceptions. But what I came here to say is that ANYONE can file for bankruptcy themselves. You don't need an attorney. The forms are very straight forward and tells you what you need to do. The most important thing is to not forget anything, especially any debt. I included not only original debt but the same debt from collection agencies. I worked on it a couple of hours in the evening for about 2 weeks. It's long and I'm sure you'll have to read some of it 2-3 times before you understand exactly what they are asking but google helps. You can literally google line for line and find all the help you need. Also, the class you have to take is inconvenient but I'd hardly consider it a burden. After all, you are defaulting on loans you willingly agreed to pay back. I did my class online while I watched TV and drank coffee.

  • Student debt? Where are the parents ? Your daughter wants to to East coast private school for library science ? JUST SAY NO! Teach return on investment.

  • Well, there's a chinese dictation that says: " _a fool man and his money don't stay together for much time_ ". Without discipline and financial education, even whole world's money never will be enough to you. You can't living an "A class" pattern, if you belongs to working class. That's basic, like drinking a cup of water. More people should learned with the 2008 real state crisis.

  • So... Could I pay off my student loans with credit cards and file bankruptcy on the credit cards?

  • Business celebrities, Republicans, and CEOs will always bitch about how morally bad it is for regular people to do the things businesses do on a daily basis. The trick is remembering that they're Chaotic Evil narcissistic psychopaths who would literally stab you to death if it positively affected net profits. They're your absolute enemy in ways few humans can be. To the extent they get what they want in the world, it operates as an attack on all of us.

  • Damn John could have won an Oscar for this one

  • Julianne Moore fucking annihilated that scene in Magnolia.

  • I remember from my credit counseling... they told me to reduce my child support, lol! It was to high to sustain.

  • Theyre just gonna do away with credit scores...the companies want to lend to anybody

  • John you are my hero you talk about topics that everyone shies away from but not you you go directly to the core of a problem and show everyone who's responsible and why oh why can't we fix it because in the end it's ridiculous that no politician or government representative can do ANYTHING about it I vote John Oliver for something anything just so we can stop the madness

  • a classical double bankcruptcy

  • If getting a piece of junk mail from a bank offering a "shiny" credit card is enough to get you to apply, you deserve to be stuck in bankruptcy - Kevin O'Leary is 100% correct.

  • Once in a century pandemic? So I guess HIV/AIDS, the 1968-69 Influenza A/H3N2, and the 1958-59 Influenza A/H2N2, are all things that didn't happen? HIV/AIDS death toll is upwards of 35 million, and those 2 Influenza outbreaks between 3 and 8 million.

  • According : Investopedia : Top 5 Reasons Why People Go Bankrupt 1) Medical Expenses (not your choice mostly. Only obesity, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and smoking related illnesses are mostly the consequence of your life choices). 2) Job Loss (can be the consequences of your choices or not). 3) Poor or Excess Use of Credit (personal choice). 4) Divorce or Separation (personal choice). 5) Unexpected Expenses (not your choice).

  • I had to claim bankruptcy (I was involved in a collision then in a coma for 5 months) when I was 18 I'm almost 40 now and I'm still trying to overcome it

  • It's funny how these issues car-crash into each other - the bankruptcy story ties directly into the healthcare system which ties into the filibuster...

  • We all agree in one particular thing, that judge is a idiot and deserves all the bad things in the world.

  • Even if you die with student debt, the debt follows your family members until it is paid off. At least, that's the way it is in Canada.

    • Only if your parents co-sign your loan. If you get federal loans you do not need a co-signer, if you get a private loan you probably do. The debt only follows your family if they sign off and agree that they are fine with it when you get the loan. Look for student loans from the government if you wish to avoid this. Also a good chance you'll also get better interest rates. People just signing up for student loans from private institutions is just silly.

  • Not Really. In fact, *Soo* Not Really, that what is actually the stem of the rotten Daisy, is, that people are actively seeking to excuse frivolous and undisiplined spending, to the point of never concerning themselves with credit debt that they purposely.incur, because they will simply wipe it away with yet, *ANOTHER* ,so called, ""Bankruptcy"" In other words, the frugal and Responsible, pay for those without scruples or money-sense. And they call it Bankruptcy. Keep Swinging, Jon, Eventually you'll fail to fail.💋

  • Never thought I’d say this but dammit Bernie. You were so close. Son of a bitch. Fuck.

  • O divorce is not unavoidable......I completely avoid it by not marrying and going into debt. So why do they always put women on the stands....why does society always feel sorry for them more than men when making any decisions

  • Sadly for all this show does to entertain me on this clip it dropped the ball big time... This vaguely covers two sections of the bankruptcy law, never mentioning other sections or the fact each section is for a select situation. Mr. Oliver even makes a reference that starts with a chapter 11 situation and the punch line would only be true in a chapter 7 case

  • I am sorry but in my country if you cant pay your debt, they take eveything you and your family have and if it is not enough to pay your debt you will be in jail till persuade a loan shark or sell a kidney or something.

  • We have Chapter 13 in Canada it's called a consumer proposal basically regardless if you owe anywhere between $1000 and %250,000 you can get this any higher and Full Bankruptcy is your best option as a person who did this at the beginning of the pandemic I had 25,000 in debt now only have to pay 7500 on 125 a month plan for 5 years and my debt is gone for good

  • this show is so much more awkward without the audience telling me when something is funny. this guy is just not funny.

  • Two months ago I posed a simple question as a reply to a comment here. they should have a term for predatory collectors like that. like...a lending tiger. or a borrow cougar. those sound clunky though. maybe someone can think up a better name 2 Months later, here are the results. horace: debt rat. It's not predatory, predators have dignity. Those are pure scavengers. • Another case of a government solution that is worse than the problem it was supposed to solve.

  • Biden looks worse in this than he does now.

  • Make pre-approval for a credit card illegal. Institute a minimum income requirement for being subjected to a credit counseling course. Include descriptions of both chapters on the front page of the bankruptcy filing paperwork. Force applicants for bankruptcy chapters to acknowledge their awareness of what each chapter can and cannot do. Penalize anyone who directs a debt sufferer to the wrong chapter of bankruptcy for their particular situation.

  • If you allow student debt to be discharged in bankruptcy you close the door to a college education to millions of young people. So if your goal is to not allow young people, especially minorities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to be able to go to college, by all means allow it to be discharged.

  • I don't have a lot of debt but I have no money. I have used , over the last few years, all of my 401k money and any employee stock that I owed to survive with my family. Now that that is gone, I am not sure how I will.

  • I agree with John Oliver on this one... rare lately but pleasant. A simpler, and therefore more equal system of regulations on everything from income taxes to bankruptcy protection laws to business formation is sorely needed in North America. Ever expanding powers of government have only served to entrench the elite. Smaller government with simpler rules and regulations would absolutely benefit society, and would shrink the wealth gap. I find it interesting that most politicians claim they want equality, and yet nearly all of the policies they support only serve to exacerbate the problem.

  • Cut your expenses and live below your means. Save and invest most of your money. Shoot for saving 30-50% of your income if possible. But if you can only do 10% then do that. broaden your knowledge so that you can do better in personal finance and investing also diversify your income which is why i use a financial adviser who handles my portfolio. Let time work for you. Start as early as possible, i made my first million last year, every year makes a huge difference..
